Rug runners make an excellent addition to a busy hall or stairway -- But what do you need to consider?

Rug runners, also known as carpet runners, stair runners or just plain runners, make an excellent addition to the busiest areas of a hall or stairway. A carpet like this can help protect hardwood floors, retain warmth in a cold room, absorb unwelcome noise, whilst giving the entire area of the room a totally new look.

Stair runners have been used for many years and these special area rugs are an essential feature of many grand houses and public buildings. Stair rugs are available in many different styles and materials, from persian to tropical and sisal to cotton. It is important when surveying the area a stair runner is to be located to remember that these special area rugs must be securely fixed to the stairs. This is best achieved by simply tacking them securely to each stair or by installing stair rods to hold the carpet firmly in place.

It may surprise you that carpet runners are the second most popular type of area rug after square rugs. Most of these runners are long and rectangular in shape, in some cases over 100 feet in length, although long oval braided rugs can also be used to make a fantastic runner.

A rug runner also makes a great addition to a main room, such as a living room, by placing the rug so to divide the room into different areas of use, for example dining and relaxation areas. They can also be used to mark out the intended routes within a room.
